The shift happened in less than a millisecond. Maybe it wasn’t actually a shift, but rather a conversion. Regardless, Zane watched it occur. She watched, but didn’t have time to say a single word. It happened too quickly, like a knife slices a finger on the cutting board. It slices, and you look down to see you’re bleeding. Jim’s eyes had widened. The color had drained from his face. The bully had recognized his victim.

“Oh, my God,” Jim said. “Oh, my God, please forgive me.” He dropped his face into the palms of his hands and began to sob uncontrollably.

Zane sat down on the hospital bed and placed her hand on his shoulder. His breathing was labored. She felt his wide shoulders heave with every sob. She took a breath, released it, and spoke softly. “You are forgiven, my son. God is here. He loves you and forgives you. I forgive you.” Zane rubbed Jim’s back. “Your wife and little girl fell victim to an awful accident, an accident that you had nothing to do with. You are forgiven, my son. Go and sin no more.”

An entire lifetime of remorse flooded from eyes the color of Jaina’s as they locked on the deep blue eyes of his victim. “I’m so sorry…”

Without any hesitation at all, Zane opened her arms and pulled him close.
